The Wave
Back to Page, AZ Main page.I've been hearing about and reading about the Wave for several years. My problem was getting a permit to make the hike. They only allow 14 people a day in to this area to keep it from getting ruined. Ten permits are given out on the internet 6-7 months ahead of time and the remaining four are given out on a drawing basis the day before they are valid. One of the big attractions of this trip for me was the opportunity to hike to the Wave. Click on images for enlarged view.
The Wave This amazing place is formed from water cutting through layers of folded and curved sandstone. It's an amazing place.
Wave Reflection We were lucky with all the dry weather we've been having to have enough water in the entrance to The Wave to get a reflection. This is actually taken from the entrance to The Wave, with the main formation just around the corner to the left.
Notch in the Wave This little anomaly or notch in the normal flowing lines attracted my attention. I took several images at various times throughout the day, but liked this one best.
Second Wave (the Swirl) This formation is another 1/2 mile or so past The Wave. It's well worth the extra hike. We came up earlier in the day, but decided to come back as late as possible to catch the best light. I took this shot then we headed back to The Wave for a couple more frames.
Wave in Shadow This is The Wave in late afternoon shadow. The beautiful glow on the far wall is sunlight being reflected a couple of times. We had to leave right after this shot to make it back to the cars before dark.
