Christmas in the Tetons 2002

We took the opportunity to spend Christmas in Jackson, WY while our son, Derek, was working at Teton Mountaineering for the Christmas break.  I was able to get up early two mornings and take some pictures.  One important difference between this trip and our trip during the summer was the temperature.  On Christmas morning just before sunrise it was -26º F.  Fingers, toes, and batteries don't last long in that kind of weather.  To see some animal pictures I took on this trip click here.

If this looks cold that's good.  That was one of the primary things I wanted to convey in all these photos.  I was off about 15 minutes on my timing for sunrise, so I got to stand out here for an extra 15 minutes freezing my feet and hands.  These are the Tetons from the Snake River Overlook.

Here is almost the same composition after the sun has started to hit the highest peaks.  Again, the feeling is cold.  This was Christmas morning.  Even so, before I left this spot there were two other photographers there.

This is a more panoramic view from a few minutes later.  There was quite a bit of cloud and mist rising from the lakes just in front of the mountains.  There were times when the peaks were almost completely obscured.

The second morning I had the timing down and it was about 15 degrees warmer, but snow flurries and clouds were completely obscuring the Tetons.  I chose to head a bit East away from the clouds.  This is along the Gros Ventre river.

This is another shot along the Gros Ventre.  This is again supposed to be screaming, "cold".
