Half Dome

Up Half Dome The Falls Valley Floor El Capitan

Back to Yosemite Main page.

Half Dome is exactly that.  The remaining half of a huge granite dome that was carved by glacial ice.  Either it or the other huge granite monolith, El Capitan, can be seen from most spots in the valley.

Half Dome with Alpinglow

This was the first sight of the valley we had as we drove in from Oakland the first evening.

Stoneman Bridge and Half Dome

Stoneman Bridge and Half Dome reflect in the calm waters of the Merced River.  This time of year was great for reflections.  Later in the spring, the runoff increases the flow and messes up the reflections.

Half Dome Sunrise

The rising sun lights up some of the rocks east of Half Dome as well as the clouds.  This is taken from Tunnel View.

Half Dome Reflection with Moon

We had hoped to capture the moon rising before the glow of sunset faded.  It took about 15 minutes too long for the moon to break the horizon, but this twilight shot reflecting in a pond near Yosemite Falls is still a great image.
