Longboat Key, Florida
September 2003

In September 2003 we spent a week in Longboat Key, Florida.  It was apparently their off season, but we loved the lack of crowds and the mostly cloudy weather tempered the usually hot weather at this time of year.  Here are a few of my pictures from the trip.

John Ringling, one of the Ringling Brothers of Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus fame built a mansion and art museum on the eastern shore of Sarasota Bay.  After his death he left both to the state of Florida.  They fell into disrepair.  When told that there was a leaky ceiling in the room the Ruben's paintings were displayed in, one Florida legislator is reported to have said, "Rubens! If I wanted a Rubens I'd send out to the deli!"  The state finally appropriated money to maintain and refurbish the museum and the mansion in the 1990's.  Here are some images from both.
